Sketchbook 25 x 00AR - When Sketches Dance

The empty plate sits before me, a canvas of possibilities. What can I really offer than myself? It's a question that echoes through my latest series of AR-enhanced artwork, created as part of Vancouver's "Made from Scraps" initiative. This project has become my artistic meditation on sustainability, breathing new life into discarded materials through both physical collage and digital animation.

I keep the rough ones in on purpose. A sketchbook that only shows the polished work is lying about how it was made.


 

Some of these took thirty seconds, some took an evening. You can usually tell which is which, and that contrast is the whole point of the book.

 

Each piece begins as a careful arrangement of scraps - forgotten papers, discarded materials, fragments that caught my eye. But they don't end there. Through the magic of augmented reality, these static collages transform into living, breathing animations. It's a bridge between the tangible and the digital, the discarded and the renewed.
 

Switching tools mid-page keeps the hand curious — ink one day, soft graphite the next, a ballpoint when nothing else is in reach.


 

None of this was planned. Each drawing started as a single line on whatever page happened to be open.

A live sketch is less about the finished image and more about training the eye to catch a gesture before it disappears.


 

These are the pages I almost tore out, then didn't. The mistakes are part of the practice, not separate from it.



  

Speaking of transformation, my journey into Japanese language learning has been seeping into my work lately. The learning process reminds me of throwing a bucket of water at someone - whatever sticks is what you've learned! I created these placards with Japanese alphabets, each character a stepping stone in my language journey. Now they all live in what I affectionately call my "wonky jar" (my brain). But like all precious things, they need regular tending. Without practice, these carefully collected characters might slip away, much like water through cupped hands




These AR-enhanced collages represent more than just artwork - they're chapters in an ongoing story of learning, creating, and reimagining. Each scan of the QR code reveals another layer of meaning, another dimension where static art learns to dance.
